Cracked Glasses: A Junior Self-Portrait Diptych by Courtney Coffman (2011)

My diptych features the concept of judging people before you know them. Within my first photo, where a boy can be seen staring at a doll, the first part of my moral can be seen. His arm portrays a type of analyzing action as he looks down on the dollI chose to have the doll lower, and in his hand, because the boy has control of how he perceives someone, and society will generally look down on new peopleI also chose to have a doll to reinforce the idea the he can change how he sees her, and being an inanimate object, she can't do anything. The glasses the boy wears are cracked, which obscure his vision. These glasses make it so that everything the boy sees about the doll is blurred, which connects to the concept that the boy can't clearly judge the doll, or a person. Finally, the picture is in black and white, because when you judge someone, you fail to see all the details, or colors, that define them. For my second photo, I decided to show what it looks like when you see the real person, and their true personality traits. All the objects shown represent passions, hobbies, and other attributes that define me. The box in the center is meant to be me, and is open so that all my contents, or personality traits, can be seen. You can also see an open lock and key, showing that I opened myself up for someone, such as you, to see what defines me.
