Perspective: A Junior Self-Portrait Diptych by Lauren Salinero (2011)

I Am. I am a big picture person. I wonder if I studied enough for the history test. I hear the class quieting as scantrons are passed out. I see a handful of test packets held over the shoulder of the guy in front of me. I want to go to a good college. I pretend I can zoom in and out on the earth like one of those nature shows. I feel curious, as always. I touch snow on an Australian ski resort. I worry for the young businessman at a job interview in Sweden. I cry for the mother waiting in line at a free clinic in Haiti. I am a big picture person. I am a big picture person. I understand I will only meet a small fraction of the world's population. I say perspective can make any problem easier. I dream of impacting more than just a small fraction of lives. I try to consider the big picture. I hope that doesn't mean I'll run out of time on the history test. I am a big picture person . Perspective is very important to me. My diptych shows this big picture mentality in the context of school and homework. The left image shows what things might look like to a student with their head down and their blinders on, someone so focused on the next due date that they lose sight of the bigger picture. On the right, we see how much more is going on in the world in that the student is missing out on.
