Stage Fright: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Julia Day (2011)

The purpose of my illustration is to communicate the contradiction of my love for performing. As a performing arts student, I love singing, acting, and playing instruments in front of others to show off my skills. However, the flip side is I deep down have really bad stage fright and I am constantly under anxiety from a fear of people judging my work and actions. To communicate this, I created a stage mirroring the MVHS theater. Then I placed myself on that stage in the limelight to show my love for performing. Finally to illustrate how anxious I am of people judging me and laughing at me, I replaced the people in the audience with monsters to show my unconscious fear of the audience. The monsters themselves are modeled after other fears, such as scorpions, disease, horror movie demons, and babysitting. This is to show how fear and stress of one thing can lead the mind to stress on other issues at the same time.
