Catch: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Janna Wang (2012)

When I was a little kid, I used to pluck all the fluffy dandelions off of the grass fields at school and make wishes. Those silly, naive prayers followed something on the lines of ''I wish I can be a beautiful, famous ballerina,'' as I was a vain kid who viewed the world as simplistic and easy goals. As years went on by, I came to understand through my successes and failures how goals have to be achieved one step at a time. The one big wish from that fluffy dandelion became reasonable appetite size, one pod at a time. This narrative illustration incorporates the lessons I have learned and the hopes I have put away, which I wrote about in one of the ''Things I Have Learned so Far'' essays. The abstract symbol to use a crab is because crabs reach their goals by scuttling sideways. Their funny little skitter takes them in zig zag paths through their daily travel because they can't walk straight towards what they want. Life reflects the crabs struggle, where your hopes are broken down to achievable and before they are forgotten or lost, like the dandelion's magical pods in the wind, you have to reach to catch the opportunity.
