Decompose Within: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Karly Osborne (2012)

The story portrayed in my illustration is about a girl who suffers from self-depreciation. It begins one morning when a girl wakes up in the morning and finishes off all the cereal in the house. Later that morning when her sister and mother wake up looking for food, they realize there isn't any left. The main character then suffers from diminished sense of self. She feels the blame when her mother and sister are forced to start their days on empty stomachs all because she ate all the cereal. The story was inspired from the phrases ''being out of cereal,'' and ''diminished sense of self.'' This illustration is an attempt to depict this story in an art form using Adobe Illustrator. The darkness in the image represents the overall dark state of mind, and the apple represents the girl from he story. The apple is decomposing into the roots of the tree as it symbolizes a diminished sense of self. Eroding into something new is it's function, it's its way of life, and is therefore doing it to itself. The girl, similarly blames herself, depreciates her feelings, so what happens to herself is her own fault. The roots of the tree represent the eerie feelings that wash over the girl and are ultimately ''eating her up.'' And finally, the tree shows the result of the decomposition. It emphasizes the idea that these emotions are part of this cycle of life, and while the apple decomposes, something new will come out of the process.
