Jealousy: Love and Hate: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Monica Hsu (2012)

As our second assignment in Design during our Narrative Unit, we were assigned to create a unique illustration based on an original story we wrote and utilize the knowledge we have with Adobe Illustrator as second quarter Freestyle students. Throughout this unit, we were assigned to write a variety of stories, ranging from 55 Fictions to Short Stories. With each story, we were encouraged to write with the stylistic skills we learned in English. We needed a clear introduction, rising conflict, climax, falling action, and resolution. With that, we were to create an illustration to further communicate our story. I chose my animation storyline as the basis of my illustration because it has a clear conflict. In the beginning of the animation, the main conflict is revealed when Penelope the peacock is introduced. The three main characters envy Penelope for her beautiful and colorful feathers, while each character has found something to dislike about themselves. This conflict is what I based my Illustration off of. The bright, colorful feather on the left of the image represents the beauty of Penelope. On the opposing side is a white feather, representing the three other characters that don't exactly share the same type of beauty. Incorporated into the white feather is a quote about jealousy that I heard in a rap by Drake. I found this statement to be extremely true and, even though it is straight forward, applies directly to my storyline. Originally, I was going to make my illustration of a beautiful eye and a green eye, representing the green monster of jealousy. However, I recently learned that the top of the peacock feather is called an ''eye''. So I decided to alter my idea into something more abstract, yet more relevant to my story at the same time.
