Humiliated Through Overconfidence: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Patrick McClellan (2012)

In my illustration, I wanted to tell the story of an extremely overconfident student who goes on his computer all night trying to convince his friends to stay up and talk to him. Instead, they all leave to study the test they all have the next day. My character, cocky as ever, is convinced he'll pass the test effortlessly... so he stays up all night playing video games. Predictably, my character fails the test, and he's forced to study with the teacher after school while all his friends hang out. I thought the ideal representation for an overconfident character would be a donkey. Overconfident, overbearing, and stubborn, the donkey in my illustration has blown off his work, and casually sits in the corner. He realizes, however, that he's completely alone, and he becomes embarrassed (shown with the dunce cap). Initially, he was overconfident, and secure, but in the end, he is left alone and humiliated-though he'd be the last to admit it.
