Mise En Scene: A Senior Mise en Scene Illustration by Lauren Amorese (2012)

There is a Petco fish bag on a checkout conveyor belt. Philbert Hannigan, Sara's grandfather, plans to take it home and swap it with Sara's fish that he forgot to feed over the weekend. After a difficult inner struggle that pit his morals against his desire to maintain his granddaughter's affection, Philbert decided to buy the replacement fish without telling Sara. He hopes to get home and make the swap before his family gets back. Instead of a new fish in the Petco bag, there is a heart shaped watch. The shape of this watch represents how by buying a new fish, Philbert is hoping to preserve his granddaughter's love. In actuality, as shown by the clock part of the watch, Philbert is only buying himself time until Sara realizes what actually happened. The Petco bag is in focus in the foreground because it represents his inner conflict and also is the key decision that affects the rest of this story.
