Lost in A World of Words: A Junior Experimental Project by Nicolas Fricker (2013)

I’m exploring the feeling of confusion when reading with dyslexia. The eye represents a universal way of interpreting a message that can be communicated through an image, or a series of images. The pattern in the iris represents another universal way of communication. It is a pattern created by applying a certain frequency in a closed medium. The pattern is connected to a flat thin flexible surface where sand or salt is applied. Frequencies creates different patterns that can be made visible with light matter such as salt or sand. All the words around the eye, show that humans created a way to communicate by creating shapes put in a certain arrangement. But as a student who is diagnosed with dyslexia, I have a better understanding of sounds and images.

I first took an extreme close-up picture of an eye. I then took an image of lights, green, red and blue. I took the picture with a slow shutter speed, and while holding the zoom, i twisted the camera, creating this effect of getting sucked into the image. The pattern in the iris, is an image of the pattern created by a frequency applied to salt. The words in the background were created by adding a bunch of random words together with different sizes.
