Gifts: A Junior Experimental Project by Rachel Uyeda (2013)

For the Experimental Unit I explored the unease I feel when I’m not true to myself. To do this, I wanted my art to be made up of many different layers, so I first spray painted a puzzle with textured spray paint. I scanned it into the computer to maintain the integrity of the texture, and I then, in Photoshop, added in the black and white world map. To portray the interactions with the people in my everyday life I made two people out of newspaper pieces.

Every piece of art needs a focal point, so to make the people stand out, I increased the contrast and the saturation of the coloring of the newspaper. As you can see, the character on the left is handing the character on the left a letter or a package of some sort, but the audience doesn’t know, therefore each audience member is required to write their own story for the two people and the world in which they live.
