Cosmic Conflicts: A Junior Experimental Project by Christopher Thiem (2013)

For my experimental piece I wanted to explore false expectations by showing how there are two different sides of every situation. I show the sun and brightness on one side and the moon and darkness on the other. The inner circle of the piece shows the two planets colliding. This shows the conflicting perspectives of every issue and how they will eventually meet in a collision. This collision between light and dark is the most important part of my piece and this is why it is located at the center.

In creating this piece I used both Illustrator and Photoshop. In Illustrator, touched up and edited the planets to make the appear the way I wanted to before I assembled the piece in Photoshop. The Photoshop portion was the most rigorous part of the project and my favorite part of this creation was the use of brushes. I used custom brushes to create the interesting designs seen on either side of the piece. I wanted to make these designs as symmetrical as possible to show that that light and dark side of a situation may be closer than they seem. The use of filters really helped the overall feel of my project as they made everything mesh together much better than it would have otherwise.
