Converging Structure: A Senior Surreal Photo by Davis Brown (2013)

For the surreal assignment in Design I composited two high dynamic range photos. I then brought the photos into Photoshop to add sharpening filters, balance colors, and increase brightness and contrast. The background image is of a bamboo forest in Kyoto Japan, and the photo of the floating object in the center is of a power line tower shot at an upward angle. Both photos demonstrate a sense of structure and immensity. The bamboo forest illustrates natural structure and immensity in the way that the bamboo stalks span into the sky and shade the surrounding area. On the other hand, the power lines demonstrate artificial structure and immensity in their height. I converged the photos together inside of Photoshop using multiple layer masks to remove foreground bamboo stalks, and add a glow behind the floating image of the power lines. In addition I finished the composition by overlaying a subtle texture of dirt to add depth and create a more surreal look and feel.
