Kareen Burns: A Senior Profile Portrait by Elizabeth Halliday (2014)

Kareen Burns is the local librarian at Loyola Elementary School, a district school that teaches children grades K-6 in the Los Altos/Mountain View Areas. Along with providing contemporary library and research skill for each student at Loyola, Kareen is the spunkiest, most energetic woman in the district. She has completely reinvented the elementary school library system by introducing technology, a library curriculum and hundreds of new books and authors. (All of which she has read.) Kareen has a magical ability to find a book for any student, and even hosts weekly Reader's Advisories to work one on one with students who are having difficulty connecting with reading. This experience has taught me the importance of not only reading, but the lessons and skills that you can learn from reading as well. It's amazing what a book can do!
