Phillip Rogers: A Senior Profile Portrait by Jordan Albert (2014)

Tainted Steel - For my profile project, I had the pleasure of interviewing Phillip Rogers. Phillip is currently the owner of a tutoring organization known as Goals. Goals isn't your standard tutor facility. Goals primarily tries to find and exploit the way their students learn best. This is their focus because Phillip believes public schools do not cater to everyone, and students who struggle in them tend to fall through the cracks and continue to do poorly. The main reason Phillip interested me as a person was largely due to the catered learning he provides, and the fact that he does much of his work for free. Before this project I worked with Phillip for a few months in which he helped me immensely. For example, one class I had a C in went up nearly fifteen percent in less than a month. In addition when my parents no longer wanted to pay for the lessons, he offered to do them for free which I thought was very noble of him.

During the course of my project the opinion I had of him definitely shifted. When we began this project, I met with him twice and he was very helpful, but for over a month after that I tried to contact him with no response. Since he was the subject of my project, I needed things like photos and a contact for my next interview. One could imagine that it was trouble meet the deadlines when I couldn't get what I needed. However, when I did meet with him he gave me great quotes and information such as how he has created a system for obtaining a new student, and figuring out how he can cater a specific learning style to that child. Had I taken photos of him the first time I met with him, I could have easily evaded a stressful week of being the only person without a single picture of my subject. To conclude, while not being able to reach Phillip was very frustrating, I still greatly respect what he does, and hope he continues to do this because he's helping a lot of people.
