Broken Beauty: A Junior Conceptual Project by Kendra Evans (2015)

I am exploring the feeling of irritation through the experience of stargazing.

My fine art medium that I made is the wings and the dress my model is wearing. For the digital mediums, I gave my model a pixelated look, added little white specs around the wings, added a vignette, and darkened the under layers of the wings in Photoshop, and made the background in Illustrator. My interpretation of my concept was that a person would become irritated or sad from stargazing, which I interpreted to mean anything beautiful because it was flawed or did not work anymore. For this project I decided I would make a scene of an angel with destroyed wings surrounded by rubble. Wings are sometimes used as a metaphor for a soul that is so happy, it could fly. By making the wings broken, the metaphorical soul is depressed or dying. A dying soul would be very irritating or sad for the owner of said soul. The white specks around the wing show how the wings are breaking, and the rocky background makes the angel seems trapped and unable to fly away. I attached the wings to a model partly so it looked like an angel who is crying because her wings are broken and she can’t move, and also so that the wings didn’t look like just a cluster of feathers.
