Neptune’s Growl: A Junior Conceptual Project by Sabrina Kwong (2015)

My concept statement is exploring the feeling of pride through swimming. I expressed my statement for my graphic design element to be very literal, because I believe my statement could be seen as very straightforward, and at the same time could be turned into a story. I made the lion in Adobe Illustrator, so that the lion could stand out with vibrant yet uncommon design elements and the background watercolor and watercolor paper to create a sense of water and scales.

The lion represented pride, and yet the background gives of the feelings of when one is negatively prideful. If you look closely at the pupils of the lion, you would see the picture of the planet Neptune. The reason I chose to place a picture of Neptune as the eyes of the lion, is because it represents the god of the sea, Poseidon; hence this is where I placed a narrative to further explore my statement. A story of a prideful lion who was too arrogant to listen to others, when it tried to swim in the sacred pond, therefore cursed by Neptune to be forever part of the sea.
