Thin-Skin: A Junior Conceptual Project by Savannah Carroll-Muñoz (2015)

I am exploring the feeling of suspicion through the experience of accepting myself. For this piece I started by outlining an anatomical heart with flowers in ink on watercolor paper. I then painted in the heart and flowers with watercolor paints. From there I scanned the paper and used Adobe illustrator to draw the dark hand reaching around the heart. I then covered the inner heart with hexagons using the polygon tool so it looked almost like a trapping net.

This art piece portrays suspicion through the dark and unknown hand as well as the darker purple parts of the heart that I intended to seem mysterious. I included the flowers because I wanted to show that even if someone looks beautiful on the outside, they may still doubt themselves on the inside, and so they are insecure when it comes to interactions with strangers. I think that many of us live inside our hearts when we feel attacked or unwanted since that is where our last bits of strength reside so I wanted to show that this soul feels alone and that although the darkness filling their heart scares them, they have the option to climb out and grow into something new once they have overcome it.
