Off Road: A Junior Visual Narrative Comic by Eric Garcia (2016)

My comic is about a guy who is the star football player for his high school. It's the night of the Homecoming game, and the school just had a close victory. My character, Ian, is on his way to a victory party hosted by his girlfriend. As he is driving, his tire blows out. in the middle of the road there is a broken branch. He slams the brakes, but is unable to control the car, and he crashes off road.

To create my illustration, I first started sketching the necessary images in my notebook. there were no problems with the initial layout. The first challenge that I encountered was transferring the images from my book out onto a sheet of graph paper. There, I had to figure out a specific ratio so that I could draw the images much larger than what I already had. Once that was figured out, I drew out the pictures, and then I used a burnisher to slightly indent my illustration board so that I could draw and color it in preparation for is the be scanned. Once all the coloring was finished with the coloration, I took a picture of the illustration board using the Genius Scan app and sent it to my computer via e-mail. Taking that image, I moved it into Adobe Illustrator as a background layer. From then on, it was a matter of covering the lines and adding color using the pen tool, line segment tool, star tool, and text tool. I am pleased with the result, which has a kind of comic-like feel, but given more time, what I would do differently would be to make it look more realistic with shading and gradients.
