Jealousy: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Emerson Domke (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of jealousy when traveling around the world.

In my photo, there is a mailbox and many postcards sticking out of it. The mail in the mailbox is all from different places to emphasize the international travel and the great distances covered. Juxtaposed to the mail, the mailbox is solid and static. It does not travel around the world, let alone move at all. The mailbox is a forest green to represent the jealousy it had for the mail and the freedom that comes with such a luxury. The mailbox fits the theme and is stuck, planted, or trapped; it does not have the same free range as the mail it works with.

The mail and postcards represent the objects that are traveling around the world, since that is their main purpose. To me, mail represents travel because, even though no person is traveling, the object itself travels all around multiple cities, states, countries, etc. to fulfill its goal. The green mailbox is meant to show the jealousy it has. The mailbox, contrary to the postcards, is stationary and cannot travel. Making the mailbox watch the mail come and go but not granting it the freedom to travel itself makes it jealous, or green with envy.
