Suspicion: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Hudson Jones (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of suspicion through the experience of accepting others who are different.

My image shows a sword peeking out of its sheath, surrounded by other fake “weapons”, most of which are nerf guns. The sword represents suspicion. While they can sometimes be a way to show heroism, in various forms of media, particularly T.V. shows (such as Game of Thrones) they represent violence and war. Both of these things are caused by intolerance; unfair suspicion of another group of people on the basis of race, gender or any other trait they may have that they cannot control. However, the toy weapons sitting beside the sword represent acceptance of others. The sword is only part of the way outside of the sheath, as overcoming prejudice in order to accept differences in others is a slow process.
