Write Out: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Robyn Watson (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of denial through the experience of an accident.

In my photograph, there is a piece of paper that has been crumpled and discarded on the wood floor, as well as the bottle of correction fluid that has been used to cover up portions of the text on the paper. The paper takes up most of the space and one portion juts out in the lower left hand corner, creating a focal point on the text. The darkness as well as the angle portray the feeling of being low to the ground, gloom, and wanting to cover up past mistakes. The background is a corner to show the dismissal of possible mistakes and the want to forget. The text on the paper was created solely using suggestions on my phone and is one run-on sentence. This symbolizes our interactions with others and how we sometimes express things involuntarily out of habit as well as the possibility that we maybe shouldn’t have rashly said anything. The hurry and lack of logic in the text represents the accident part of my concept statement. Additionally, the denial is shown through the words and phrases that have been covered up through the use of correction fluid, in order to hide blemishes or imperfections that taint the text.

In Photoshop, I enhanced the light and contrast in order to make the focal point on the paper really pop out from the dull background. Also, I cropped my photograph to encompass the rule of thirds and draw the viewer’s eye to the focal point. I learned how to make a selection and then use the band-aid and stamp tool to remove a black stick in the background that was distracting from my piece. Finally, I added a vignette to further create contrast and create a sense of unity in my piece. The text on the paper was created solely using suggestions on my phone and is one run-on sentence. This symbolizes our interactions with others and how we sometimes express things involuntarily out of habit, then wish that we could take them back, especially when texting or communicating online. To further explain how we at times neglect using better word choice to improve relationships, the paper is crumpled on the floor in the corner.
