Transport: A Junior Conceptual Transport Project by Amanda Chan (2017)

The object I chose to photograph was my dad’s old bike. I found it in my garage and thought that the spokes of the wheel were specifically interesting because of the color and way that they weren’t rusted, unlike the rest of the bike. I chose a green bush to be my background of the photo when I was shooting because I thought it would provide a nice contrast between the stark silver of the spokes of the tire and the deep forest green in the background. I then decided to zoom in from under and to the side of the wheel because it provided a perspective that isn’t commonly seen with bike tires and spokes. I thought that the way the spokes were the main focus of the piece were an interesting composition choice because it provided some interesting angles and framing to the picture.

I learned in Adobe Photoshop how to mask and add effects through layering and how to alter pictures using the various tools such as the brush or pen tool. I used these skills and applied them to my picture by making the contrast even more stark and highlighting the shiny metal in the spokes of the tires. I also used leading lines to add action and dimension throughout the photo. Adding that kind of dimension to the already shallow depth of field made the picture more uncommon than what we would normally see. I specifically edited the highlights on the wheel and how the spokes jump out of the dark green background.
