Apothecary In Love: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Lalana Tan (2018)

Elliot, an apothecary, is working in his shop as he sees a man come in to buy medicine. Elliot gains an immediate interest in him, staring as the man goes through the shelves. The man comes to the counter to pay, but accidentally drops a glass jar. After the initial awkward stares and clean up, they laugh it off together. The man waves goodbye, and Elliot waves back, completely and utterly lovestruck.

I created the initial sketch for the illustration by drawing it in Medibang on an ipad, then I put the sketch into Adobe Illustrator to continue it there. I did it layer by layer, starting with the background, then the furniture, drawing the character, then coloring it all. I chose to create Elliot’s creature hybrid representative to be a raccoon/shiba inu hybrid. This is because raccoons are sly and smart, and shiba inus are generally playful and happy, as Elliot is. I ended up making a creature with a raccoon head, tail, and markings, and a shiba inu body and coloring. I used simple perspective to create the room that the creature is in. The background is the apothecary shop that Elliot owns, and the scene is when he is working on making medicine as he first sees the man come in through the door. If I were to do this assignment differently, I probably would have included a creature for the man as well, so the audience can get the whole picture just from the illustration. But, all in all, I am quite content with the way that this piece came out because of the colors and playful vibe that it gives off.
