Alone: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Loren Chun (2018)

My story revolves around a girl who is left alone in a once beautiful, but now desolate, place. She is on a constant search for some sort of hope that she is not alone and that the winter will go away.

My character is supposed to be young, weak, dependent, delicate, reserved, and innocent. I used a lamb to symbolize youth and innocence as well as weakness. I also used a fawn to symbolize weakness and dependency since a baby deer is often too weak to stand on its own. To symbolize delicacy, I used a butterfly because of its delicate wings and lifespan. For reserved, I incorporated a chameleon and fox because both are difficult to find until you search carefully. As for innocence, I used a dove and red panda. I had another sketch which combined an otter, turtle, butterfly, and crane. However, I thought that it did not portray the traits of my character strongly enough. In this project, we were required to incorporate linear perspective. To do this, I had attempted to shoot reference photos for my character from below the model so that the viewer may be looking up much like the main character would be looking for hope. Incorporating this linear perspective, however, was quite difficult for me as I did not know how to show the perspective my background which was supposed to be a desolate giant garden covered in snow and a gloomy sky to portray the hopelessness of the story. I am very proud of my illustration because I was able to create a unique and interesting character out of a program I had no experience in. If I were to do this project again, however, I would choose a different angle for my linear perspective.
