Ben's Self-Portrait

Artist Statement:

Gratification
In my piece, you see my hand holding an Ipod on the street, while casting a shadow. Before my sophomore year, I was used to material possessions, the instant gratification that was an Xbox or a new CD. However, this would all change when I began to work. While I received money for my countless hours of hard work, I also gained insight. The feeling of gratification, that I had earned what I bought for myself. Although having a new 80GB Ipod was nice, I would soon realize that these “things” are not what makes me happy, but instead, working for something important to me, something I could believe in. For we are not what we buy. While I have an Ipod in my hand it does not effect me and is invisible when looking at my shadow.
