Nora's Self-Portrait

Artist Statement:

Torn
This piece touches on the idea that everyone has two sides of their personality; the layer that you see when you first meet them and the layer of who they really are. As you get to know a person better, the first layer begins to disappear.
Depending on when someone meets me, they might see me as a boring, morose person, but as they get to know me, I’d like to think that they’d see my happy personality.
The Victorian shape and sepia color of the picture and aged feel of the canvas surrounding it, provides for an old feel, like one of an old friendship. As the friendship canvas has aged, it has received tears and burns through wear and tear; the represent the getting to know a person, the first impression being burnt or torn away. The color showing through the sepia layer represents the actual personality being revealed.
I hope that you can walk away from this piece with a better understanding that first impressions, although very important, are most often deceiving. I hope that you don’t just judge a person from your first encounter with them, but dig deeper to really know them.
