Intro

This is my documentary website. It contains all of my work from the last quarter at Freestyle Academy during the documentary unit. We were tasked with finding a subject or organization to make a documentary about. The project takes over all 3 classes I take at Freestyle. In my Digital Media class, we made an Intro Video about the subject of our choice using After Effects. We also made this website as apart of that class. In English, we had to write a research paper/book about our subject and a problem related to it. Then in Design, we designed a book using the paper we wrote in English. I chose to do focus my documentary on an organization called Sleeping Bags for the Homeless. Sleeping Bags for the Homeless is a non-profit, volunteer group that delivers food and other supplies to the homeless of Silicon Valley. Below is my Intro Video about the organization.

When we were assigned the documentary project, we were tasked with making an entire book about our documentary subject. That entailed writing the book in our English Class and designing the book in out Design Class. To create the book, we used Adobe Indesign. The application is amazing. It has everything you’d ever need when making a book. As well as the many tools as your disposal, the possibilities are endless. Unlike other programs that give you limited choices on the layout, fonts, or graphics you add, Indesign lets you create anything you want plus let’s you use things you made in other programs like Illustrator and Photoshop. All of the pictures I used, were ones I took while helping out with Sleeping Bags for the Homeless. I tried to make my layout simple and not to complicated to contrast with the mess in the homeless encampments. The fonts I used were impactful and helped get across the important message my book held.

Starting to produce a book is intimidating. It’s hard to get an idea of what to add to all of the blank pages. Ms. Parkinson, our design teacher, helped us a lot by showing us the correct order in which to complete them. It’s a lot easier to design one page when you’re focusing on just that page, not the whole book. Overall it was a fun project. I would probably make another book after this one. One thing that I should have been better at was my time management. I realized this after I spent an entire class period picking out a font for my Table of Contents. Even if I had spent my class time wisely, I would still not have been able to complete the book if I had not gone in after school to work on the book.
