Welcome!
Welcome to my FANTASTIC Narrative Two website! In this site, you will find all the work I did during my second to last, also known as the 7th, Freestyle Academy project. The theme of this site, similar to my first narrative website, was to tell a story. However, the difference betweent his narrative, is that we were asked to use dialogue to express our story. While this seems obvious for any story, it is actually quite contrasting to the first site, where we weren't allowed to use dialogue. As you scroll down, you will see my English story, my Web/Audio animation, and my Design pieces. Thank you, and please enjoy at your leisure.
English Stuff
Of course, since this is a narrative, the English portion of this unit was extremely important. We were tasked with writing one story, but also writing it from three different perspectives. While film students had to make a 10 minute film and only wrote a 10 minute long story, us Web/Audio students had to only make a 2 minute animation, so we were asked to write three stories to balance it out. We only ended up using one of the stories for our animations, so it seemed kind of pointless in the end. Thanks, Mr. Greco.

Below you will find the three different perspectives I wrote for my story. It was definitely interesting to make stories from not only a third-person perspective. I usually only write stories from a third-person, simply because it is much easier to do so. I've never really cared for writing character development, as that takes a lot of work. Also, how much character development does my English teacher expect from a bloody hedgehog? Or a rat for that matter? C'mon, Mr. Greco. Keep it together.

Each of these tabs has the same story written in a different perspective. The writing style and plot is more or less the same, only with certain words or sentences changed around. This way, you can see what different character, each with unique personalities, thought and acted during certain parts of the story.

While the story is more or less the same, I encourage you to read all three sides so that you can see each character's perspective and individual character development.

Josh's Perspective

The cold, iron bars prevented any sort of interaction with the outside world. Past these bars, inside the ‘giant box’, was me. I slumped my shoulders as I let out yet another sigh, knowing many more would be coming. I looked around his prison, desperately wishing I was on the other side of the bars so that I could get at least some sort of interaction with another being. Anxiously, I paced around the floor as thoughts of how I ended up in this situation bubbled up in my mind. It felt like it was only yesterday that I ended up this cage…

“This is no time for Joshua the Hedgehog to reflect upon the past!” I internally screamed. I had to focus on the future, focus on getting out of this barren and tanbark filled hedgehog cage. I had spent so much time thinking about what the outside world was like, and how much I would like to be out there. However, this damn lock on my cage would make sure that I wasn’t going anywhere.

“Thinkin’ about ‘scapin’ again, huh Joshy-boy?” A noise squeaked from my neighboring cage, home of Billy the Rat. “You knows there ain’t any way outta here,” Billy coldly stated. “Start gettin’ used to it, mate. Yous gonna be here for a while…” Why does Billy always have to talk so much? As if I desperately needed someone to crush my dreams even more. As he turned his back to me, I could only think about proving Billy wrong. I’d show him.

Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a large and hairy human begin walking towards the direction of my cage, causing me to flinch with each loud stomp. One of its arms reached towards the cage door, and its thumbs popped it open. The hand of the arm reached into the cage and prepared to grab hold of me as it had done several times before. To be quite honest, I was getting quite tired of being held and petted every day by this guy. I know he means well, but can’t he see my need for speed? Luckily, a phone hanging on a nearby wall began to ring just before he wrapped his hand around me, causing the human to let out a small ‘oh’ and head towards the source of the noise. And that’s when I saw his mistake. He had forgotten to close the cage door.

My heart stopped. As soon as it started again, I checked to see if the human, and when he saw that the human’s back was turned, I did not hesitate to sprint out of the cage at full speed. My destination was the front door, which I also noted was open. I could hear Billy shouting towards me, but I chose to ignore it as I was in the middle of a more pressing matter. My goal was so close, I wasn’t about to stop just to hear Billy talking crap again.

It felt like hours before I jumped through the doggy door of the building’s front door and made it to the other side. The light was blinding, but still beautiful in my mind. I tried to absorb as much of my surroundings as I could, but I quickly realized I had to keep running. My owner would be closing in soon. I began to feel confident, so I decided it would be fun to taunt Billy as a farewell. I turned my head towards the house and yelled, “Haha! Smell ya later, Billy! I’ll see you in--” OW! In a daze, I looked up after falling on my behind and saw that I had just butted head with a large, wooden sign. I squinted up to see what the sign said, and I read, “Warning - Mine Field!”

“I tought I taw - I did! I did! I did tee a heddy-hog! Aw! The poor heddy-hog! They faw down and go boom! Kaw kaw kaw kaw kaw!” I turned my head towards the source of this annoying voice, and I saw a bird laughing his feathers off, perched on the top of the sign. The bird’s mockery continued as he said, “too should be swow down, unwess too wanna get bwown up! Kaw kaw kaw kaw kaw!” The bird continue his bellowing as he flew away into the sky before I could think of a clever response. Of course, that didn’t stop me from trying to get him back.

“Screw you, bird! Nobody tells me to ‘swow down’! I’ll go as fast as I damn well please! I was born to go fast!” I shouted as loud as I could to make sure the bird would hear me. I picked myself up and began sprinting at full speed towards the mine field. I wasn’t going to let that bird - or Billy - or my owner - beat me. I would go fast!

“I did it!” I shouted with glee as I crossed the finish line and made it to the road across the mine field. “I was finally able to go as fast! I knew I cou-” Suddenly, I was struck by an intense pain, and I felt myself being catapulted into the air. I looked down and saw that I had just been struck by a large truck. As I fell back to the ground, I felt another intense pain as I hit a mine and bounced back up into the air. I launched back into the air in the direction of my house, seeing that I was heading directly towards my cage. Before I knew it, I slammed against the wall of the cage and looked up to see the cage door closing behind me.

“Well well well… if it ain’t Joshy-boy.” I turned around to see Billy the Rat squeaking from the neighboring cage. “How was yous vacation?”

I sighed, resigning to my fate. I sadly replied, “It went by a little too fast, Billy.”

Billy's Perspective

The cold, iron bars prevented any sort of interaction with the outside world. Past these bars, inside the ‘giant box’, was me. By this time, I had grown long accustomed to my life inside here, and wasn’t expecting anything to change any time soon. Personally, I didn’t really care about escapin’ or anything, considering I had everything I could ever want here; My owner made sure I was comfortable. However, I couldn’t speak the same for my hedgehog friend across the way.

I looked past my cage’s bars to see Joshy letting out another sigh. You’d think that guy would be used to it by now, but no. All he does is complain and whine about wanting to run around but can’t. I couldn’t care less, but that doesn’t mean I can’t piss him off a little.

“Thinkin’ about ‘scapin’ again, huh Joshy-boy?” I squeaked in the direction my neighbor’s cage, home of Joshua the Hedgehog. As he turned to face me, I coldly stated, “you knows there ain’t any way outta here. Start gettin’ used to it, mate. Yous gonna be here for a while…” He returned my words with a frown, and decided it was best to ignore me. I spat on the floor and turned away triumphantly, knowing that he’d be much more conscious of his sighs for the rest of the day. Perhaps I only said these things to him since there wasn’t much else to do, but boy is it fun to give him some shit.

As I turned away and began my trek to the other side of the cage, I noticed our owner getting up from his chair and begin walking towards our cages. Truthfully, I never much cared for the guy, but I suppose I can’t hate the guy who gives me food. At least he complains less than that hamster. I decided watching him wasn’t worth my time, and attempted to rest my eyes.

I could hear the clattering of a cage door opening in the background. It is around feeding time, I suppose. Only makes sense he would feed his favored hamster first. My thoughts, however, were interrupted when the phone on the wall began to ring. It felt as if time slowed for but a moment. The next thing I knew, I was listening to the small pitter-patter noises of a hamster’s feet across a hardwood floor.

I turned around to find the source of the noise, only to see my old pal the hamster running towards the front door. “Wait up, Joshy-boy! Come unlock my door! Don’t leave me, boy!” It seemed too little too late, however, as Josh ran out the door before a word could reach his tiny ears. I was stuck.

I began to spend what seemed like hours contemplating my decisions of being mean to Joshy-boy. Was I too hard on the kid? Nah, I was just teachin’ him what real life was like. I shouldn’t be sorry. The kid was just too selfish to turn back and save me. I hope I can return the favor one day...

The suddenly, the hamster I knew and loved flew right through window, landing perfectly back in his cage. The door shut behind him as well. Without missing a sarcastic beat, I said, “Well well well… if it ain’t Joshy-boy. How was yous vacation?”

Resigning to his fate, Joshua let out a sigh and replied, “It went by a little too fast, Billy.”

Third Person Perspective

The cold, iron bars prevented any sort of interaction with the outside world. Past these bars, inside the ‘giant box’, was a lone, male figure. His shoulders slumped as he let out yet another sigh, with many more likely to come. He looked around his prison, desperately wishing he was on the other side of the bars so that he could get at least some sort of interaction with another being. As he paced around the floor, thoughts of how he ended up in this situation emerged in his mind yet again. It felt like it was only yesterday that he ended up this cage…

However, this was no time for Joshua the Hedgehog to reflect upon the past. He had to focus on the future, focus on getting out of this barren and tanbark filled hedgehog cage. He had always dreamed about gaining his freedom, exploring the outside world and escaping. However, there was a small lock in the way that only those with opposable thumbs could open.

“Thinkin’ about ‘scapin’ again, huh Joshy-boy?” A noise squeaked from a neighboring cage, home of Billy the Rat. “You knows there ain’t any way outta here,” Billy coldly stated. “Start gettin’ used to it, mate. Yous gonna be here for a while…” With a small, sly smirk, Billy turned away from Joshua’s cage and went back to eating some cheese in the corner.

Before Joshua could make any sort of comeback, a large and hairy human began walking towards the direction of Joshua’s cage, making a loud stomping noise with each step. One of its arms reached towards the cage door, and its thumbs popped it open. The hand of the arm reached into the cage and prepared to grab hold of the hedgehog as it had done several times before. However, a phone hanging on a nearby wall began to ring just before Joshua was grasped, causing the human to let out a small ‘oh’ and head towards the source of the noise. On his way to the phone, however, the human had made a horrible mistake: he had forgotten to close the cage’s door.

With only a single heart’s beat, Joshua looked over to see if the human was looking in his direction. When he saw that the human’s back was turned, Joshua did not hesitate to sprint out of the cage at full speed in the direction of the front door. Billy began shouting towards Joshua, asking him to open his cage door as well. However, Joshua did not pay any mind to Billy, as he was much too focused on getting out of the building as soon as possible.

It was only a matter of seconds before Joshua jumped through the doggy door of the building’s front door and made it to the other side. Even though he had passed this barrier, Joshua continued to run forward as fast as possible, giving complete disregard to everything around him. Feeling a surge of confidence, Joshua turned his head towards the house and yelled, “Haha! Smell ya later, Billy! I’ll see you in--” right before butting heads with a wooden sign. As Joshua recovered and looked up to see his attacker, he saw a large, white, and wooden sign with a bird perched on top of it. The sign read: “Warning - Mine Field!”

“I tought I taw - I did! I did! I did tee a heddy-hog! Aw! The poor heddy-hog! They faw down and go boom! Kaw kaw kaw kaw kaw!” The bird on the post laughed in a Tweety-esque fashion as Joshua rubbed his head in pain. The bird’s mockery continued as he said, “too should swow down, unwess too wanna get bwown up! Kaw kaw kaw kaw kaw!” The bird continue his bellowing as he flew away into the sky, leaving Joshua, who began yelling obscenities at him.   “Screw you, bird! Nobody tells me to ‘swow down’! I’ll go as fast as I damn well please! I was born to go fast!” Joshua’s flurry of words was drowned out by the wind against his ears as he proceeded to sprint down the minefield as fast as possible. Everything went by in a blur, and before he knew it, Joshua had made it on the other side of the minefield.

“I did it!” Joshua shouted with glee. “I was finally able to go as fast! I knew I cou-” But suddenly, Joshua was struck by a large van moving on the road he was standing on. The force of the van shot him back towards the minefield, and he headed straight towards a mine on the ground. The explosion only continued to bounce Joshua, and before he knew it, he had somehow bounced back into his cage. The cage door slammed shut behind him.

“Well well well… if it ain’t Joshy-boy.” Billy the Rat squeaked from the neighboring cage. “How was yous vacation?”

Resigning to his fate, Joshua let out a sigh and replied, “It went by a little too fast, Billy.”

Design Stuff

For this unit, we were tasked with creating two seperate pieces in Design.

The first piece was Surrealist. We were asked to combine two objects or things that didn't relate and put them together so that they did. This would involve making things look larger, smaller, changing colors, blending stuff together, etc. The requirements also stated that we had to make the whole thing in black and white, except for one object which would be the focal point. I actually procrastinated horribly with this project, but I'm still pretty happy with how it came out. I put a large world in a small box, which is symbolic in some way. I'm not sure how. Whatever.

The second project we created was the Blink, also known as the Amplified, piece. Simply put, we were asked to draw and color without any sort of pre-planning or knowledge beforehand. The point of the project was to show not only show our inner selves by drawing on instinct, but also how much we have improved as a designer by being able to use design techniques without having to look them up. While I thought this was a cool project, after finishing it I realized I actually really needed the pre-planning stage in order to make my art look good. It didn't exactly turn out as I imagined.

Web/Audio Stuff

And finally, for the Web/Audio portion of this unit, we were asked to create an animation based off our story from English. We first created an animatic (which was just a bunch of drawn pictures scanned and played one after eachother) in order to more easily make the final animation, which you can see below.

Click here to play the animation!
As you might be able to tell from the animation to your left, I've never really had the ability to make an animation that looks good. However, I believe I was able to mask this with the fact that I can distract the viewer by making them laugh. I try to put in a lot of funny scenes into my animations in order to distract them from seeing how terrible it is. I also really liked putting in a ton of explosions. I actually cut some dialogue and character development in order to fit the time frame and add more explosions. Also, you can most likely see the differences between the final animation and my English story. I ended up cutting a large portion of the story simply because of time constraints and the difficutly to animate some of the beginning scences and characters.

I got all the images from my animation from Google. I then edited some of the photos so they would be easier to move around or simply looked better. The sound is also the stolen property of Google, specifically Youtube. Hopefully, my website doesn't get reported. I used a hedgehog as the main character because I felt he would be much easier to animate than a human. Also, why would a human be in a mine field? That doesn't make any sense.

And thus you have reached the end of my Narrative 2 website. Thank you for reading all these words and viewing my work. Hopefully, you felt this website was very pleasing and will come back for more at a later date, just like my ex-girlfriend said she would.
