Introduction to entire conceptual project and reflection.

To create my Photo Haiku video I used mulitple applications. First, I recorded the audio using ProTools. To create the image, I used Photoshop. Prior to all of this I wrote the poem as English homework. The photo below is what the Flahs application looks like when my video was finished.

I am exploring the feeling of desire through the experience of speaking up.

My photo is of a water balloon mid-pop. A knife was used to pop the balloon. The knife is a major piece of the metaphor because it, when directed at the balloon, can cause everything within the balloon to fly outwards into the world. I chose to use an out-of-focus background because when the balloon pops it does not care about what is around it almost as if it doesn’t exist. The water from within the balloon is spraying outwards in a blur of motion with no care what else is happening or the ramifications of its actions.

In photoshop I first cropped the image so that the water balloon was centered. Then I added a vignette to focus the viewer's eyes on the balloon and the knife. My selection was of where the balloon was prior to the pop. To do this I needed to use the pen tool to be able to recreate the curvature of the balloon. I chose to select where the balloon was rather than where the water is now because of the filter I chose to apply to the selection. The filter is translucent and shows the transition between the smooth, contained balloon and the jagged, explosive water.

In my photo I chose to shoot a water balloon mid-pop. The water balloon represents someone who does not normally share their ideas with others. Someone who is separate from others, quiet. The wall that the person uses to keep separated is strong enough on a normal basis to hold but when a knife pokes the balloon from the side it what cause it to pop. The knife symbolizes an outside force that causes the person to explode. When someone bursts they have absolutely no care for the other people who are present, almost as if they did not exist. To show this I intentionally made the background out of focus. The water droplets from the balloon are flying outward in a blur of motion and they can strike anywhere without thought. Just as a furious person may lash out at other with not thought.
