Introduction
Project Linus logo

My documentary was about a beautiful organization called Project Linus. They are an association that makes handmade blankets for children in need. They have changed many children and their families lives. This is a community that is full of people that have the passion to help others by making blankets in their free time. In English we were asked to write a 5 page documentary, and to interview three people. We were required to research our subjects and to write up transcripts. While in Design we were asked to design our own magazine in InDesign, which would have photos that we have taken and our article in it.

My interview was mainly about the organization Project Linus, I wanted to have it through the point of view of the blankets journey. I interviewed three people; Sophie Gauthier who was the mother of a recipient who received a Linus blanket. Sharon Lee who was the San Jose Chapter Coordinator of her chapter. Lastly, I interviewed Isabelle Wimmers who was a blanketeer (a Linus volunteer). This project was the most stressful for me, it pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. It was stressful to write an article that would be worthy enough to display your subject.

This project is not just for you, it is a website that will represent and share to the world your subject. I was doing it for Project Linus. It was extremely time consuming especially the commercial. I had a lot of difficulty with Affect Effect. I was having trouble starting my commercial, I also had a lot of technical problems. In the end, I am so happy with how my video ended.

What I value the most is the interviewing part of this project. I was able to visit another world, to meet people who love to make a change. I was inspired from the moment I interviewed Sharon Lee. The passion she displayed while talking about Project Linus was contagious. I hope the article I have written perfectly shows just how great Project Linus really is.

This is a screenshot of the process of making my commercial. I was inspired by the commercial Mr. Flo showed us which was about Firefox. It was a continuous flow of pictures. It was a casual video, and perfectly displayed unity. I thought it was the right way to present Project Linus. After Effect screenshot

Magazine

M

y magazine is about Project Linus, which is a a nonprofit organization that makes handmade blankets. It is a community that is filled with people who want to help out. They believe that these blankets help a child in need go through difficult times they face in their lives. needle and thread designThis magazine was inspirational to me, because I was creating a project that was not only benefiting me but also was beneficial for the people I was interviewing. I wanted to make my subjects feel proud and acknowledged for what they do in this world.

This project was new and difficult because of using new software like InDesign, and also having to interview people. My favorite part would be interviewing, because it allowed me to step out of my shell. I was introduced to a whole new world, and soon their passion became my passion. I am so grateful to have had this project to help me learn how to get involved with other people's passion and hobbies and how to design my own magazine. It was difficult to put down my ideas and thoughts in my magazine, but in the end I am proud with what I have come up with.

"Like so many children who received blankets for Project Linus, each of them touched my heart in a different way. I have always been mesmerized by the unspoken universal language of a security blanket "

~Karen Loucks

I hope that my article and magazine exemplified how important my subject really is. If I was to be honest, Project Linus is too important and special to be put down on paper.

My magazine design was based on trying to give a feel of coziness. Since my subject was about blankets, I chose colors like grays, and blues. I designed a graphic design that was a knitting ball and needles. I learned to use text wrap, separate my text into columns, frame and put drop shadows on my pictures. It was a difficult process, but I am content with what I had come up with.

For my Documentary project, I interviewed three people; Sharon Lee, Isabelle Lee, and Sophie Gauthier. Click below to learn more about them!

Sharon Lee

Sharon Lee is the Chapter Coordinator for the San Jose South Bay Area Chapter for Project Linus and has volunteered for the organization for 10 years. Her job is to introduce people to Project Linus and to make it as easy as possible for them to be successful at creating blankets for the children that they serve. On top of that in her free time she makes blankets. She truly believes that the Project Linus blankets not only bring joy to the community of blanketeers of Project Linus, but also to blanket recipients.

Isabelle Wimmers

Isabelle Wimmers serves as the webmaster for the San Jose Chapter and keeps the website updated. She is also an avid blanketeer and likes to make blankets in her free time. She enjoys knitting blankets because they are quicker to do. When she has the time she likes to make her own patterns for her quilted blankets. Wimmers believes that Project Linus blankets give comfort to the children that receive them and help them when they are sad or cold. She has been helping Project Linus for 5 years.

Sophie Gauthier

Sophie Gauthier is the mother of a recipient of a Project Linus blanket. Her son Colas Gauthier was 11 years old, when he landed at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital after falling 12 feet onto his face. He suffered from bleeding in the brain, multiple head and face fractures, and was facing complex surgeries. He received his blanket while recovering from his surgery. To this day, Colas Gauthier now 25 years old, still has his Project Linus blanket. The blanket is a little quilt, that has designs of the Milky Way, constellations, sun, and stars.
