The Documentary project was the biggest endeavor of our Junior year here at Freestyle Academy. The project first stemmed from a research paper that we wrote in English. The paper was split into six parts, the foreword, introduction, chapters one through three, and the conclusion. The foreword served as a reflection on the entire process. The introduction was a transition as well as a brief overview of the whole paper. The three chapters incorporated elements of research and personal experience, and needed to be written about different parts of our angle. The conclusion wrapped the whole paper up in a concise and efficient manner. From there, the paper was made into a book in design class, which can be viewed in the book tab. The book incorporates design elements as well as photos that we had to take ourselves.

  • This project was significant because it was
      • A research based project
      • Local
      • Inspired by elements of my own life, mainly my love for music
    • What I learned: 21st Century Skills
      • Collaboration
      • Technological Literacy
      • Social and Civil Responsibility

The Profile Project we were assigned the task of "find an intriguing person and research the subject's influence on others." I picked proffesional traveler and photographer Bart Smith as my subject. Bart is a hiking aficionado and professional photographer, who is currently walking the National Historic and Scenic trails, and documents his experiences through photos which he turns into books. This unit emphasizes character-based and narrative style journalism rather than the issue-based and essay style storytelling structure of the Junior Documentary Unit. We were to write an extensive charcater profile paper, design a magazine to go along with it, take a proffesional portrait of our subject (see right), make a website, as well as create a commercail for the "star".

  • What made this project different:
      • More of a personal project
      • Pushed me out of my usual comfort zone
      • Inspired by a strong passion other than my own
  • What I learned the second time around: 21st Century Skills
      • Collaboration
      • Visual Literacy
      • Self Direction
      • High Productivity
      • Creativity
      • Risk Taking
