2022-2023 Poster-Moodboard:
Not Everyone Speaks Your Language by KyharaC

I created a public service announcement with the purpose to inform people about the difficulties encountered with overcoming a language barrier. People can comprehend what it's like for someone who is trying to communicate in a language other than their own. Linguism, discrimination based on a person's language, may be intimidating. Language barriers are a common social problem in the United States, especially for immigrants who are trying to acquire the language as they settle into a new country. But because native English speakers don't understand how it can impact someone's life, it’s most frequently overlooked. As someone who had to deal with a language barrier since a young age, I can attest to how daunting and challenging it is to speak with others. Not just me, but a handful of other people, too. Unfortunately, there is not enough discussion of the language discrimination that many non-native English speakers have faced. I designed this PSA poster because I've noticed that some individuals may be really hostile toward others who don't speak English and unfortunately it’s not brought up enough. For example, it was incredibly challenging to discover existing PSAs about language barriers when doing this project. Though it’s an issue many may face, people don’t find this important and I hope to change that. I want my audience to understand that being more sympathetic towards people with language barriers can go a long way.

The support I got from Freestyle Academy made it possible to create this PSA poster. I came up with a rough outline that helped me with my final product due to the mood board I made for this project, where I placed different pieces of art related to my topic to inspire my own design. My PSA featured an illustration of two people speaking with each other, one of them is larger and more aggressive while the other is the opposite. I illustrate one speech bubble as a giant one with jaws trying to consume the second speech bubble, which is much smaller. I use this example to demonstrate how daunting it might be to try to speak up. Not everyone will satisfy a person's demand to speak a particular language, my tagline is “NOT Everyone Speaks YOUR Language.”. Despite the fact that English is the primary language in the U.S., individuals who are trying to learn it shouldn't be treated unfairly or made fun of in any way. I can confess, it was difficult to create this PSA because I had different ways to go about this but I’m glad I settled on this. My design is simple but very straightforward to make my message clear. This project was the first one I created in Design and I feel great about how it turned out, especially with the purpose behind it. Related website
