For my PSA I created an anti-alcohol poster. My PSA features a tilted glass bottle filled with a green poison-like substance that is flowing out of the top. On the front of the bottle is a skull label which reads “40% alc by vol” to establish that the substance is alcohol. The idea behind my PSA is to discourage alcohol abuse due to its adverse risks on health. This is why in the bottom left of my illustration the alcohol transforms into the statement: “Kick it before it kicks YOU”. I chose to go with my color scheme because I wanted something simple and vibrant, with colors that contrast. Starting out, I knew that I wanted to make the alcohol green, as it is commonly used in depicting poison in cartoons and media. To further enhance the intense green, I chose to go with a darker blue background.
This piece was created in Adobe Illustrator, mainly using the pen and brush tools. I started with sketching a rough outline of where I wanted my elements to go. After choosing a color scheme, I decided on what colors would be for what. When the main bottle component was done, I mapped out where the text would go. Using the rectangle tool I made the background and added a border. While working I faced a couple of challenges, mainly with the tagline. I had trouble coming up with a statement that was unique, and kept changing my idea. Originally, I didn’t know what tone to go with, but I eventually ended up with a tough-love vibe instead of keeping a softer/pleading tone. The one Illustrator problem I did struggle with was making the glass bottle have any sort of dimension, so I kept it quite basic.
