Antonio Carlos Jobim was a highly influential artist in the Bossa Nova movement of the 1960’s. An era of great cultural change through the international exchange of music. This was a time when Brazilian music, characterized by its calm jazz-like sound and poetic lyrics captured the attention of people around the world. My poster aims to highlight the warm and relaxed atmosphere of this period, specifically envisioning a sunset performance on the Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. The setting reflects the era’s blend of nature and nightlife, which ultimately defined Jobim’s sound.
The genre I chose was Bossa Nova, which is more of a sophisticated sub genre of Jazz that blends the upbeat tempo of Brazilian samba with the complex harmonies of American Jazz. This created a both dance inducing and harmonically rich sound. My poster’s intent was to show this blend using organic and flowing shapes resembling samba’s energy, combined with a cleaner mid century layout to reflect jazz’s structured elegance.
To begin creating this poster I started by researching vintage Brazilian graphic design and album covers to create my moodboard. Then in Adobe Illustrator I used many layers and the pen tool to create my shapes and the overall design. I then gave the whole artboard a crumpled paper texture, as well as a slight yellow tint to invoke a sense of time and place. I decided to use a more hand drawn and natural font to make it seem like the text was written in the sand. Through this process I learned how important colors are, as well as how important spacing is in design. If I were to change something about this project I would likely hand draw the writing in the sand to make it look more natural.
