My concert poster was from the late 90’s to the early 2000’s. During this time, people wore sporty streetwear, girl bands were reaching new heights, and pop culture was booming. Hip hop was becoming more popular, and the idea of Girl power was taking off. This was a vibrant time, and because of it the Spice Girls became one of the most known girl bands in History.
The Genre of the Spice Girls was primarily pop but incorporated elements of R&B. Pop by definition is music that has catchy hooks, simple melodies, and incorporates danceable rhythms. Spice girl’s songs tend to be very upbeat, with a repeatable chorus, more happy chords and beats that give their songs a sense of spunk and energy. As well they incorporated R & B which was seen in their third album “Forever” which gave a more modern, slick feel than their traditional pop music.
To create this poster I used Adobe Illustrator. For the foundation of my poster I used their country of origin, England. In Illustrator I used the shape tools to go in with the main shapes of the flag, like the red rectangles, and blue triangles that make up the base of my flag. Then for the finer details I could not find the exact slanted lines that connect the flag, so I used my brush tool and drew them by hand. One obstacle I first encountered was that my text was hardly visible. This was due to the fact originally my text was over the flag, making the black text blend in with the dark blue on the flag. To change this, Ms. P inspired me to make the flag smaller, and leave empty space for the text. This taught me the importance of functionality in the design. Although, at first I was hesitant to move the text because I was scared the design would be compromised, I realized practicality was important as well, I tried to compromise, and make the flag smaller, which actually did not ruin my ideal design too much, and provided a clearer flow of information. Overall through this project I learned that design is both for aesthetics, and practicality, if no one can read a concert poster, what’s the point of having one?
