A Brave Soul: A Junior Experimental Project by Christopher Lanman (2013)

For my experimental design piece, I chose to explore bravery when all odds are against you. To portray this I based my project on Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play Major League Baseball. Robinson broke the color barrier, in baseball, and was scrutinized throughout his journey. When all odds were against him, Robinson preserved through hatred and racism. To design my piece I used adobe illustrator to make a recreation of the famous photo of Jackie Robinson sliding into home. Behind him I put all the colors of the rainbow, to demarcate the color barrier he was breaking. Then, I put in four photos on top of the illustration. The top two photos symbolize hate, one is a hate letter, the other a racist article. However, I put them behind the color barrier and Robinson to show that he has left that all behind, and didn’t let it bring him down. Then, on the bottom I put two photos of happy newspaper articles, or articles that celebrated Robinson’s achievement. I really enjoyed designing this piece, because baseball is my favorite sport, and it is also a symbol of the progression of America in the fight for equality.
