Stars: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Elayna Parkhurst (2017)

The objects I chose for my photo are a mask and 10 red eyeballs. The mask is a fancy mask with sparkles on it and the eyeballs are red in the center, have red veins coming out of the center, and are white all around the outside. In the photo the eyeballs are placed in a circle looking at the mask which is in the center. The mask is put in the center of a ring of eyeballs because the eyeballs that represent scorn are supposed to be encroaching on the mask’s space. The eyeballs are encompassing the mask and are placed in a circle so they give off a feeling that they are closing in on the mask. All of the eyeballs are looking at the mask to emphasize the fact that they are gazing at the mask. The mask is at the center of it all because is it beautiful and the star that all the eyes are focused on. The objects are not touching because the eyeballs cannot touch the mask as hard as they try. Scorn can alter how someone sees a thing’s beauty, but cannot take the beauty away from the object itself. The spotlight that is on the mask is to emphasize its star-like quality. The mask is set apart from the eyeballs and shines brighter than the watchful eyes. My choice of having a spotlight on the mask is also because stars shine much brighter in the sky than the viewers do. The background is crumpled foil, painted black. This is to give the photo depth and I chose the color black because it is the most reminiscent of space where stars are located.

The eyeballs in this photo are representative of the feeling of scorn. Scorn is a purely angry feeling that alters how someone views something. The eyeballs have turned red because scorn controls the way people see things and red is a color associated with anger. The mask in the photo represent stargazing. When people are stargazing they are looking at something beautiful, but something that is very far away and that they cannot see the whole picture of. Masks are beautiful things that when worn make it so onlookers cannot see all of someone’s face. The eyeballs looking at the mask show stargazing because the eyeballs are circled around the mask and staring at it.

I learned that Photoshop can help bring out specific colors that got lost in the photo. Also, I learned a little about curves. Curves is a very useful tool when it comes to manipulating the intensity of color and how much color is seen. Since I used a spotlight on the mask, the red of the eyeballs got lost. I used the quick selection tool to select the center of every eyeball. Then I used curves to bring out the red of those eyeballs and emphasize that color. This gave the eyeballs a much more dramatic look which helped convey how scorn can make people seem crazy at times. In Photoshop I also applied a vignette to my photo. This helped accentuate the spotlight that was on the mask and add to the nighttime aura that is associated with stargazing.
