The Bread Winner: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Makeda Yezalaleul (2017)

In my english class, I was given the concept statement: exploring the feeling of defensiveness through the experience of having to earn money.

The bread represents the money I’m trying to earn. Yet my defensiveness, symbolized by the knife, overrides my body and inhibits my ability to bring home the dough. I shot this photo from a higher perspective to capture the light reflected onto the wrapping paper. I favored the distressed plastic over a smooth cover because I wanted to further portray the internal unrest in me when attempting to attain or earn money.
