Hand Symbol Stickers: A Junior Illustration Project by Allison Huang (2021)

For this project, I drew a series of common hand signs: a thumbs up, okay, and peace sign. My goal was to capture both the simplicity of the symbol and the intangible feelings that they can allude to by themselves or when paired with words or physical expression. They’re quite similar to color in this way — they have no definite denotative meaning but heavily shape the connotative meaning of direct communication and our overall understanding of one’s intent. I also played with more than one color scheme for this same reason, as it allowed me to see how I could quite literally “color” the meaning of the symbol to help it communicate a more specific emotion.

If I redid this project, I’d love to explore more textures and color schemes since I stuck to flat solids and relatively simple color schemes (monochromatic and what I like to think of as the UNO colors). I think some halftone textures in particular would look really cool and create a more retro vibe given their use in pop art. Related website
