Ray: A Senior 3D Characters by Emma Tei (2020)

For my 3D Character Pose project for animation, I was first inspired by the different textures of fabrics around me. Through learning about the application of 3D software such as Maya, ZBrush, and Substance Painter, I wanted to emphasize texture for my character design, and so I decided to make my character’s skin/outfit a leather-like texture inspired by racing jackets. My final character’s name is Ray, and they are a motorcyclist who enjoys roaming the city at night on their Kawasaki EX 500. Ray had modified their suits and the headpiece to function as a protective garment, so that they do not need a helmet on a daily basis. The most difficult part of this project was the rigging process of the character design to paint on Substance Painter, mainly because I was unfamiliar with the techniques and the software involved. However, I overall enjoyed the process of this production, and I feel that I could apply the skills that I learned in the future for any other digital art planning/projects.

For my 3D Game Weapon project, I was inspired by the simplistic modern animations and space-themed colors and designs to create a minimal, game-like weapon. The weapon name is a Floater, and I utilized the techniques that I learned from practicing Maya, Zbrush, and Substance Painter, in order to create a future-like hammer which the hammerhead part and the handle part is detached on purpose, as they individually float in space. Like the name, this weapon gives the carrier the advantage of attacking another in a wider range, as the hammerhead part can hit more objects while being detached to the handle. Throughout the process of production, I was most challenged with the coloring and the control of the textures of the weapon as I transferred and imported the design from and to multiple software that I was unfamiliar with. From this project, I want to apply my skills and knowledge that I obtained to work with possible gaming art opportunities in the future.

For my 3D Environment project, my goal was to demonstrate the use of Maya software in order to build a mountainous scenery with multiple Greek Temples. What I enjoyed the most about this project was the fact that I got to experiment with different techniques to create not only objects, but an environment which I had the freedom to shape into any form. Although this project was one of the first assignments in my Animation class, I found this project to be overall beneficial in the future, as I applied the fundamental techniques from this project to my 3D character and weapon designs. In the future, I want to challenge myself to work with more environmental 3D designs as well. Related website
