Attendance Policies
As part of the Mountain View – Los Altos High School District, Freestyle Academy follows the same attendance policy as the other high schools. Absences must be excused by a phone call to the home school or they will be marked as unexcused.
Because so much of the project work is done collaboratively, one person’s absence can severely hinder a team from completing its work on time. Therefore it is critical that you communicate with your teachers and project members if you know you will be absent. For effective workflow, follow these guidelines:
If you know you will be absent or tardy:
- Let your teammates know which date you will be out while you are working on your project plan. Let your teachers know the date(s) of your absence as well.
- Work ahead of schedule and turn your work in before your absence.
- Remind your teacher and teammates the day before your absence and confirm any assignments you might miss.
- When you return, make sure you have completed all assignments you missed while away.
In case of illness
- Communicate in some way (phone, IM, email) with your teammates and inform them that you will be absent that day.
- Ask if there’s any work you can do at home (health permitting). Most of your work will be outlined on your planning calendar ahead of time so you should know what your assignments are in advance.
- Email any work the group needs to complete the project by the deadline. If this is not possible, let your teammates know so they can work around you.
- When you return, make sure you have completed all assignments you missed while away.
Leaving campus during class hours Students leaving Freestyle Academy during class time are required to have parent permission and sign out with their teacher.
The consequences of missing class:
By enrolling in Freestyle Academy, you are making a commitment to a new work environment – one that entrusts you to direct your own learning. With this freedom comes responsibility – to yourself and to others. Just as in business, you will be evaluated not only on your work, but the process by which you complete a task. These workplace skills will be clearly outlined on each project rubric so there is no mystery. We’re confident that you will conduct yourself in a professional, courteous manner. If your productivity, and the productivity of others, is affected by your lack of responsibility, then we will meet to discuss if Freestyle Academy is the best placement for you.
