Blink Books
What is thought? This deceptively simple question is the core of this unit, inspired by Malcolm Gladwell's Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. Students engage in various discussions, applications, and written analyses of Gladwell's narrative case studies and research-based explanations of how we think and make decisions. The centerpiece product is the Blink Book, which contains a series of nine artistic and written responses to nine corresponding prompts. On each day of this unit, students use a different artistic medium to respond automatically to the prompt, suspending their conscious mind as much as possible. Afterwards, they respond to the same prompt in a twenty-minute freewrite. Finally, students revise and edit this raw material, synthesizing it into one truly unique book.
