Traveling

When I first approached this project, I found myself thinking too literally about my hopes and my fears for myself in five years. I mapped out my hopes: to travel to interesting places in the world and live with the locals there, as well as live in New York City, and to live a life in which I am always on the move, always traveling, possibly being a journalist. My fear was pretty simple: I was afraid that I would never be satisfied with my life, that I would achieve my goals and still feel empty.

To try and make an art piece that was not too literal, and so I thought about why I wanted to travel and why I was afraid of being unsatisfied. In the end I decided to add symbols to be my piece to make it less literal. In my piece, I am shown in the center, with the arms of an airplane. I am looking down into black that is textured. On my left, is a skyline of a big city, and on my right, there are many symbols. On the top are faces of different people of different races. These are supposed to represent the people that I will meet over my travels and the different cultures I will learn from. In the middle, there are flags of the Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. because my family is from Russia and the Ukraine, and I reside in the U.S. On the bottom, there is an Israeli flag as well as a California Poppy and a bare tree. The Poppy and Israeli flag symbolize my personal connections to California and Israel, and how I do not want to loose them.
