Killing us with the veggies

For this project we produced a parody of any song of our choosing. As a group Zoya, Giselle, and I decided on “Killing me Softly With His Song”. Looking back, at the time we thought it would be hilarious to mix in obviously displaced lyrics with such a laid back soulful song.

After picking our song, we wanted to focus on something that made us happy. Completely switching the original lyrics from being in toxic love to a need being met. This led us to writing lyrics on vegetables, since it’s something that makes us strong and healthy. However when first writing our lyrics we were a bit lost, we looked at the original lyrics of structure to make the words match the beat easier and mirrored the number of lines in each verse and chorus. For first timers we were original in our lyrics, however if we were to rewrite them we could’ve written it like a children’s rhyme and rapped them to go against the soft music. The focus of our piece artistically was simplicity since neither of us were familiar with adobe audition. This is reflected in the editing, with little effects aside from reverb and normalizing the audio. I stepped away from effects to exhibit the vocals and not muddle them, however I do wish I played more with being more creative. Such as adding in sub vocals and raising and lowering the instrumentals more. Editing with Adobe made it apparent I’m a novice, since one of my first mistakes was deleting the mix track which funnels all the other tracks to be heard, and having to make a new session to be able to export the audio properly. However after this project I can confidently say I know my way around the program and could teach others some basics, such as shift E to delete empty tracks, or inputting a mono track, and how to use tools such as cutting(r) and selection(v).

From starting out knowing nothing about Adobe, I’m proud that I was able to create a variation of a song I love. Despite having some desire to re-write our lyrics I also am proud of my group for coming up with them when neither of us have much of a background in music. From this project I discovered how I appreciate music more than I thought and am actually interested to know more about it. After understanding how almost all music is normalized extensively, it made me wonder what other procedures we often do with music with musicians get bugged by. It made me appreciate raw music more, and understand why concerts are so important to feel the music. I look forward to making my own music for my own enjoyment, and seeing how different music genres have come to be. I hope more people can fall in love with the process of making music.
