I wrote a parody song with original lyrics that were based on my personal experience. I took the happy-go-lucky lines about being positive and sandwiched it between lyrics that described my messy bedroom. The juxtaposition of the energy of the beat and the subject of the lyrics added an element of playfulness and relate-ability to the song. I paired up with Lulu on the singing parts, and the song switches up to a beat halfway through to add a rap section. That represents a change in mood (from lighthearted to more confident), and offers a different side of my creativity.
I recorded numerous vocal takes in Adobe Audition and used effects like reverb, delay, and panning to design the sound. I mixed my vocals with Lulu’s and concentrated on making sure the transition between singing and rap was seamless. The most important thing I learned was how to add emotion and energy with sound design. The message of my song is about being yourself and to not sweat the small stuff when life gets messy. I’m most proud of the collaboration between my group member and I, the clean nature of our mix, and how the beat switch serves to aid in telling the story with the music.
