Our main project in English was a documentary research paper. We were tasked with researching a topic could be connected with our local communities, but also had a wider reach. I chose local journalism, a topic that I am extremely passionate about. For my paper, I interviewed four people who work at Embarcadero Media, a news outlet based in the Bay Area. In recent years, local news outlets, such as Embarcadero Media, have struggled to survive in this country, as print advertising revenues fall to online advertising. This is a dangerous sign for our democracy; local news is crucial to its health. But there is hope for the future in newer, sustainable business models for local news outlets.
