Introduction
magazine thumbnail

Welcome to my profile website. This unit involved finding a member of our community who we felt was interesting and played an important role. For my project, I chose to use Ric Hines as the star of my profile and talk about his involvement in music. Throughout this website, you will see a variety of products that revolve around Ric and his involvement in the music community of the South Bay Area.

In English, we wrote a research essay on our topic. The topic that I chose looked at the music community and the evolution of small bands, specifically Ric’s. I conducted four interviews over the course of this project: two with Ric Hines, one with his friend Paul Vezinaw, and one with his friend and band member Jon Barnes. If you are interested in learning more about what each had to say, check out the bio section of this website!

In Design, we took our research papers and formatted them into magazines. Incorporating original photography and graphics, we designed a magazine to fit our profile. For Ric, I chose to use neutral colors with an accent of red in order to provide an aesthetically pleasing design while still showing Ric’s diplomatic personality. If you would like to see my magazine, or read my profile essay, go to the magazine section of this website and click on the thumbnail.

In WebAudio, we created not only this website you are looking at now, but also a commercial which we use to visually show the “nutgraf” of our essays. Below is my commercial, which I created using Adobe After Effects. It uses a mix of text animations with images to promote Ric. My website includes everything else that I have done for this unit, such as a photo gallery with 16 of my best photos, a biography section to introduce the interviewees who’s help made this possible, and descriptions of my processes as I created each work.

This unit has been a challenging but productive experience, from which I will be able to apply skill that I learned throughout my life. I value the skills and knowledge that I have learned about time management and scheduling from the hectic times I had to cram in one last interview.

Magazine

As I have mentioned before, in Design, we took our research papers and formatted them into magazines. Incorporating original photography and graphics, we designed a magazine to fit our profile. For Ric, I chose to use neutral colors with an accent of red in order to provide an aesthetically pleasing design while still showing Ric’s diplomatic personality.

The rest of my design concept reflects less on my profile, but still maintains the overall effect of the research paper through simplicity. I put a very clear margin to make it easier for the eyes to fall into the text and keep them from veering off the page. The colors are faded out enough to make the contrast between the text and the background enough to be able to easily read. Lastly, the images were mostly contained in a frame, to provide a distinct area for them outside of the text, rather than having them float freely.

I improved through producing the magazine by learning more about layout design and the program InDesign. Through looking at templates on the web, I learned basic layouts that repeated themselves and I chose the one that I thought would apply best to the design as well as to aesthetics. I learned to be more efficient in creating products through InDesign, due to both practice as well as learning through tutorials. Overall, it was a challenge to come up with a design that would fit my profile essay, but I am happy with the end results.

Biographies

Ric Hines

Ric Hines, the star of my profile unit, is a singer and manager for two local bands: Ric Hines and the Ones and One Country. I interviewed him twice at his house to collect information regarding his role in music and how it had affected him throughout his life. To hear the interviews, click the audio below.

Paul Vezinaw

Paul Vezinaw is a long-time friend of Ric. He is not involved with any of Ric’s bands, making him a key window into Ric’s life with a different perspective. I conducted the interview with Paul at my house, and asked him questions involving his and Ric’s past to gain insight of who Ric used to be. To hear the interview, click the audio below.

Jon Barnes

Jon Barnes is a friend to Ric as well as the lead guitarist for both bands that Ric is in. I conducted the interview at my house with him to gain valuable insight of Ric onstage and in the context of his life with the bands. To hear our discussion, click the audio below.

My Process

To the left of this text you will find a thumbnail, which if you click will enlarge an image of my wireframe for my biography section. Using this wireframe, I designed my biography “cards” using a container for each one, which holds all of the content. With these containers, I spaced them so that the browser would calculate the margins between them to be exactly 5% of the article’s width. The cards themselves became 20% each, making it so that when you resize the browser they will resize while maintaining their positions. I made the images circular for aesthetical purposes, and added a border for an extra design element. The headers follow the same styling as all of the other headers in the page with the red, and are centered for alignment. The small text for the biographies are made so that if any exceed the boundary lengths of a certain width and height (i.e. if you resize the browser too small) then the overflow will be hidden but the content is available to scroll so that it is still readable.
