We learned about building an arc, expressing emotion, and building a world for a viewer to immerse into. In English, we learned descriptive storytelling and analyzed works of literature, uncovering their narratives. In Digital Media, we picked up new tools to learn new forms of creation and expression. In Film, we used the 3 Act Structure, and storyboarding, to build an expressive narrative film.

2

As an artist, the part of the year where I get to draw my own projects is always my favorite. Luckily, during this unit, there were plenty of chances for me to express my creativity, through our Illustrator projects and album cover work.

Exquisite Corpse

The game “Exquisite Corpse” features a group of artists. For my project, I chose to create a standee. I decided to choose this because I am a very character oriented person, and I create characters that I’d would be excited to be able to see in standee form.

Using Illustrator for image creation as opposed to Photoshop was a challenge for me. I naturally prefer more freehand forms of illustration, so working in vector styles without being able to go wild was pretty tough for me. However, what I value about using Illustrator, as opposed to Photoshop, is the flexibility and ability to move around shapes freely after creating something. Since I was working with entirely shapes, I could adjust them to my liking, without having to manually select it by hand, praying I didn’t accidentally pick up other parts of my sketch. It was pretty easy to fix mistakes, change coloring of objects, and resize things as needed. In comparing the two, I think Photoshop is better for freehand illustration and photo editing, while Illustrator is better for logos and designs that need to be perfectly clean.

I chose to create a standee because I love collecting figures and other sorts of merchandise, and figured it’d be fun to create merchandise of my own things. I love displaying objects and customizing spaces to my own as well, which items like standees allow me to do. I think it’ll be a lot of fun to have more of my own art in my space. My inspiration was definitely from Fangamer, a video game merchandise shop, as well as my experience from convention artist alleys, where tons of objects like standees were available to buy. I was also very excited to depict my own personal worldbuilding and characters on a physical object, instead of being purely digital.

In my standee production, I included my own characters because I want to continue to pursue creative endeavors with them in the future. This production was of interest to me because it served as a reminder that all these kinds of objects are possible to create myself, and I can do some really cool things with my creativity and ability. I think this Illustrator project ended up being really fun and I came out of it with a new skill, and an amazing standee to show off!

In Film, we began learning about the steps it took to tell a story through filmmaking. This unit encompassed many different film skills and techniques. I learned how to immerse a viewer in a world they could not enter, and how to make the view of the camera feel like a window into another world, rather than a simple flat screen.

We began by learning about Griffith’s Pattern, a technique for introducing narrative scenes and making them comprehensible to a viewer. The basic idea was that the camera would start with a wider shot of the scene, and slowly narrow on the specific characters, to increase a viewer’s comprehension of what was going on, and get an idea of what could be happening.

We created our own Griffith’s Pattern scene as practice…

…but it didn’t capture the technique as well as we’d hoped. Shooting in a crammed space proved to be a challenge, and we didn’t properly introduce our characters or scene in a way that felt engaging to a viewer. It was definitely a learning experience for us!

After that, we learned about the art of creating suspense. Film is all about making the viewer feel things, to maintain their attention towards the media being shown, and immerse them in the depicted world. Suspense is a great way to do so, by putting a viewer on their toes and evoking strong feelings. We learned about the use of a “ticking clock” to make the viewer feel like time is running out. We also learned about how to make the viewer feel as though there is an impending danger out to get them. Then, we made our own suspense scene:

While this scene may not have been as suspenseful as we’d hoped, I was actually very proud of this film. We put a lot of effort in making it happen, dedicating time into putting together outfits, finding good places to film, and crafting our elevator fight scene. It was very motivating for us, and everyone put passion into making it happen, filling us with determination to continue improving.

Then, we moved onto chase scenes. This unit was very interesting, as it involved a lot of use of camera angles, consistent shots, and creating visually interesting movements. We learned about the 180-degree rule, which took our interpretation of the camera as a “window” to ensure that shots stayed consistent and made sense, and that characters didn’t look like they magically flipped around from scene to scene.

I was very grateful to my parents for agreeing to act in this for me.

This assignment was pretty stressful. There was a lot to work with and remember, and it was challenging to put things together in a way that could be consistent. If I were to do this again, I would add more interesting perspective and shots, and tighten up the edit to eliminate the empty space that caused the chase to feel less suspenseful and interesting.

In our narrative unit, we explored techniques to expand our storytelling skills.
