We were meant to keep our project relevant to our elective (in my case, that’d be Film!), and I wanted to create something physical since much of my personal time was already spent on digital art, so I chose to create a set design. I struggle a lot with making my films feel immersive and 3-dimensional, and I loved the idea of projecting that kind of look into future films.

My goal was to express a character idea through a set, rather than with dialogue or acting. I wanted to achieve “showing, not telling”, which is an important aspect of filmmaking that I felt I had not quite honed in on yet.

After lots of research, I learned about different roles put together to create a set. Concept Artists do initial concept sketches, storyboards, and mood-boards, focusing on tone and idea. The Production Designer designs the overall aesthetic of the film, and oversees various aspects like color palette and set. The Set Designer drafts the final blueprints, floor prints, and other necessary design elements of a set. The Construction Coordinators build he major physical structures, like walls. The Scenic Painters add finishes and touches to the set to create a “look” (for example, paints on rust). Finally, the Set Decorator (which is really the role I took on) adds the props & decorations, as well as furniture, to a set to give it life.

Then, I presented on my research, inspirations, and showed a final video on my work:

Overall, I was proud of the hard work I put in. However, I wish my final piece showed a wider range of my skills (and I wish I’d created a more entertaining final piece–like a narrative video!). I hope to use my Zenith to further demonstrate my range and creativity, and create something that feels like a “final product” rather than a step in the process.

English – Poetry Unit

At the beginning of our Poetry Unit, we had a guest speaker come in and talk to us about different styles of poetry during workshops. While our poems ranged from cento poems to ars poeticas, I noticed all my poems had a reoccuring theme of identity, and self-reflection. I learned a lot about creative voice from those workshops, especially when we studied the works of Ada Limón. I came out of those work sessions ready to create something meaningful to me.

When I began writing my poem, I was not expecting to write about what I did–the topic I chose to dive into was very deep and personal to me. However, I was proud of how I depicted the situation. My poem reads:

Saoirse

by Anabelle Bush

You would swim a streak, carving the current to your form

and i would try, so hard, to match your riveting, inimitable rhythm

but just a beat–a moment, of hesitation

put us in a frenzy, a feeling, we could only call “scared”.

adrenaline our catalyst, a translator, between our ache

and you plummeted, and i failed, to catch you–

but your immiscible tears, i captured, in my ruthless, soiled fingers

and i, the fool i was, pretended they were heavenly

like no commercial liquid, no shoddy public pool, could compare

to your pale, trembling fingers, gripping the edge,

like you could remain right there, forever

or the way you gazed off that ledge, pretending you had no fear,

pretending, the moment you jumped, you’d be falling

                                 Forever

you’d been submerged down there, in those dark waters

for a long time, and when i snapped,

you were too far down, to hear my shriek

but it was a selfish cacophony of desperation

and it was all for You

I was very proud of this poem. In my reflection I wrote (quick trigger warning for mental health distress):

My poem was about mental health–specifically, a friend of mine. In my Freshman year, she texted us a concerning message about planning to jump off of a bridge at 4PM that day (she’s OK now), and in my poem, I reflect on those feelings. I talk about how serious her mental health struggles were, and how I looked up to her in a way that was unhealthy. I say “and i, the fool i was, pretended they were heavenly / like no commercial liquid, no shoddy public pool, could compare” which is honestly also a reflection on the romanticization on mental health and how it affected me in my life. When I say the words “selfish cacophony of desperation” it reflects on how I coped with her issues by projecting them onto myself, and pretended I was struggling too, when her problems went much deeper. That moment in freshman year was really when I realized that there were struggles beyond myself, and my poem takes on that perspective, reflecting on my emotions and how she must’ve felt. I put myself in her shoes when I say “pretending, the moment you jumped, you’d be falling / Forever” which reflects on the escape she was seeking and how she didn’t fear death in that moment, seeing it as a way out. This poem means a lot to me, and I’m incredibly grateful to be able to have the outlook that I do on the situation.

“How can you find, explore, and/or expand your passion?” was the question we were asked at the beginning of this project.
