Showcase

I think the two projects that accurately summarize my best projects in freestyle, are my documentary, and my senior narrative. I think even though I am incredibly proud of both projects, the growth shown between the two is pretty amazing.

The documentary I made was done during my junior year. Though it was one of the last projects we did, I still had a lot to learn. I love the concept and the way my partner, Sydney, and I put things together, but there are a lot of things that could obviously be improved on. The lighting wasn’t all that great, and the b-roll could be improved. That being said, I loved the project, and I am still proud of this product one year later.

This is a clip from the documentary. This image is actually one of the better lit clips we had.

I worked with the same partner on my senior narrative. We both agreed that we work really well together, so we decided to grow together on a new type of film. During this senior narrative, not only did we expand on skills that we were previously lacking in, but we also learned completely new things, like using a boom mic. If you look at the difference between some of the lighting and white balance between the two films, you can see how much we improved.

These are some images from my senior narrative. It very obviously looks better done.

I think the order in which we (Sydney and I) laid out our documentary was really well done. I think all the points flow well into each other. I also really liked a lot of the b-roll that we took. I think the videos of the family cooking and going scootering really makes it seem more personal.

I think the screenplay for our narrative film was pretty good, and that resulted in the film being pretty good. Even though there are some small errors and lack of experience that keeps the film from looking completely professional, I’m really proud of the story and the way we were able to convey it.

Because of my Documentary, I now know that making something seem more personal makes it more interesting for the viewer. I also learned the importance of b-roll so your eyes don’t get bored.

From my senior narrative, I learned that lighting can be everything. It can change the viewer’s entire perspective of someone. Under lighting can make someone seem villainous, soft lighting can make a scene seem romantic. That kind of stuff. I also learned the importance of a good story. In this project, collaboration was incredibly, incredibly important, so not only did I learn how to work better with people, I learned how to delegate, and ask for help, and appreciate people willing to take time out of their lives to make your project better. I am forever grateful for all the people who helped on my film. I’m going to take the skills I learned in both these projects, and use them in my future endeavors.

Throughout my two years at freestyle, I grew in so many ways. I learned how to handle work so much better, and how to plan and make calendars. I learned how to contact other people and work as a team on projects. I learned how to be in charge of people for projects, but also how to be a good helper on theirs. I am so amazingly happy that my life put me in the path of Freestyle because the things I learned in these two years will stay with me forever.
